Boston Summer Date Guide: Edward Gorey and Clam Bakes on the Cape Cod

We’ve gone to Boston’s MFA and the Isabella Gardner museum (and managed sneak multiple kisses under the Impressionists and in the courtyard), so now it’s time to do a deep dive into the New England eccentrics. I am of course referring to my favorite New England eccentric: Edward Gorey!!

Gorey is a queer author, illustrator, playwright, set and costume designer, famous for his absurdist, existentialist, and morbid sense of humor and writing, as well as his fastidious and elegant etchings. You’ve most likely seen his work on PBS Mystery!, or countless mugs/totebags/fridge magnets at this point, but he’s much more than a Tim Burton predecessor.

He’s a personal icon of mine so it would mean the world to tour his museum together in Yarmouth Port, and spend a weekend together in Cape Cod. It’s time to show this West Coast girl the joys of a Cape Cod summer!

Lodging: There’s a number of highly rated quaint bed and breakfasts down the street from the museum.

Food: Let’s be honest, I love a quaint bed and breakfasts as much as the next professional hot girl, but I am devoting the rest of my word count to waxing rhapsodic about the legendary FOOD of New England. Ever since Anthony Bourdain made me weep with joy and lust over fresh Cape Cod seafood in Kitchen Confidential, I’ve wanted to do a clambake.

We have several options here,my fellow land lubbers.

  1. Order from Bakeside Bakes or Mac’s Seafood for clambake delivery. The only hands we’ll have to lift are to grab the lobster crackers and to caress each other’s thigh for a wise decision.

  2. Call Chatham Bars Inn for a luxurious catered clambake because why not?

  3. Boldly attempt to do our own clam bake because we fear no god. In the words of J. Kenji López-Alt, we want to experience the “beautiful orgy of seafood, corn, and perhaps free love”. We’ll celebrate whatever success we have by doing lobster butter shots of each other’s slick sweaty bodies.

Whatever we decide to do, I know we’ll have fun because we’ll be spending it with each other!
